Certification Levels

It is the responsibility of the applicant to determine whether or not they are eligible and qualify for certification.
The Certification Standards are guidelines to also assist in planning, training and preparation.

Alcohol & Other Drug Abuse Counselor Requirements

Standards for the Alcohol & Other Drug Abuse Counselor (CADAC) reciprocal credential are listed below.

Experience
3 years/6000 hours of supervised work experience specific to the AODA domains (see below).
An associate's degree in behavioral science may substitute for 1000 hours; a bachelor's degree in behavioral science may substitute for 2000 hours; a master's degree in behavioral science may substitute for 4000 hours.

Education
270 hours specific to the domains (see below). Six hours must be specific to counselor ethics.
These hours must have been completed within five years prior to application submission.

Supervision
300 hours specific to the domains (see below); to include the 12 core functions with a minimum of ten hours in each core function area.

Examination
Applicants must pass the IC&RC International Written AODA Examination.

Code of Ethics
Applicants must sign a code of ethics statement & statement of understanding.

Recertification
40 hours of continuing education earned every two years, 6 hours must be in Professional Ethics and Responsibility.

Certified Clinical Supervisor Requirements

Standards for the Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS) reciprocal credential are listed below. Contact the board for more information.
Prerequisite
Applicant must hold and maintain current certification as a CADAC/AODA or AAODA counselor at the IC&RC reciprocal level or hold a specialty substance abuse credential in another professional discipline in the human services field at the masters level or higher.

Experience
5 years/10,000 hours of AODA counseling specific work experience plus 4000 hours of AODA supervisor work experience (4,000 hours may be included in the 10,000 hours and must include 200 hours of face-to-face clinical supervision).
An associate's degree in behavioral science may substitute for 1000 hours; a bachelor's degree in behavioral science may substitute for 2000 hours; a master's degree in behavioral science may substitute for 4000 hours.

Education
30 hours of education specific to the first five IC&RC clinical supervision domains (see below) with a minimum of four hours in each.
These hours must have been completed within five years prior to application submission.

Examination
Applicants must pass the IC&RC International Written Clinical Supervisor Examination.

Code of Ethics
Applicants must sign a clinical supervisor specific code of ethics statement & statement of understanding.

Recertification
Six hours of continuing education earned every two years.
The six hours may be a part of the 40 hours obtained for the AODA recertification.

Certified Prevention Intern Requirements

Standards for the Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) reciprocal credential are listed below.
This certification is pre-certification for the Certified Prevention Specialist level; does not require a written exam; and is not eligible for reciprocity with IC&RC.
Certificate is issued for a two-year period and not re-certifiable. CPI professionals will need to apply for the CPS level. Contact the board for more information

Experience
6 months/1,000 hours of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) within the past 3 years in prevention work experience.

Education
Fifty-six (50) hours of prevention specific education.
Eighteen (18) hours of this education must be ATOD specific.
Six hours must be specific to prevention ethics. These hours must have been completed within five years prior to application submission.

Supervision
Sixty (60) hours specific to the domains (see below) with a minimum of ten hours in each domain.

Code of Ethics
Applicants must sign a prevention specific code of ethics statement & statement of understanding.

Examination
Applicants must pass the IC&RC International Written Prevention Specialist Examination.

Applicants must sign a prevention specific code of ethics statement & statement of understanding.

Recertification
40 hours of continuing education earned every two years, 6 of those hours must be in Prevention Ethics and Responsibility.

Senior Certified Prevention Specialist Requirements

Standards for the Senior Certified Prevention Specialist (SCPS) reciprocal credential are listed below.
This SCPS credential has CPS reciprocity ONLY with IC&RC member states and eligible for the CPS International Certificate.

Prerequisite
Applicant must hold and maintain a CPS credential at the IC&RC reciprocal level

Experience
5 years/10,000 hours of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) within the past 3 years in prevention work experience.

Education
One Hundred Twenty (120) hours of prevention specific education.
Fifty (50) hours of this education must be ATOD specific. Six hours must be specific to prevention ethics. These hours must have been completed within five years prior to application submission.

Supervision
One hundred forty-four (144) hours specific to the domains (see below) with a minimum of sixteen hours in each domain. Code of Ethics
Applicants must sign a prevention specific code of ethics statement & statement of understanding.

Recertification
40 hours of continuing education hours, which includes (six) 6 hours in Prevention Ethics and (six) 6 hours of Leadership, Management, or Supervisory Skills training must be earned in two years.

Criminal Justice Addictions Professional Requirements

Standards for the Criminal Justice Addictions Professional (CCJP) reciprocal credential are listed below. Contact the board for more information.

Experience
3 years/6000 hours of supervised work experience specific to the domains (see below).
An associate's degree in behavioral science or a non-reciprocal AODA counselor credential may substitute for 1000 hours.
A bachelor's degree in behavioral science or an IC&RC reciprocal AODA counselor credential may substitute for 2000 hours.
A master's degree in behavioral science or an IC&RC reciprocal CCS credential may substitute for 4000 hours; a master's degree in behavioral science or an IC&RC reciprocal advanced AODA counselor credential or other advanced credential (NBCC, CRCC, NASW, MAC, etc.) may substitute for 5000 hours.
Work experience must have been obtained within the 10 years prior to application.

Education
270 hours of education specific to the domains (see below).
Six hours of education must be in criminal justice ethics.
270 hours specific to the domains with a high school diploma. 200 hours with an associate's degree or a non-reciprocal AODA counselor credential.
150 hours with a bachelor's degree or an IC&RC reciprocal AODA counselor credential.
100 hours with a master's degree or an IC&RC reciprocal CCS credential.
60 hours are required with a doctorate or an IC&RC advanced AODA counselor credential or other advanced credential (NBCC, CRCC, NASW, MAC, etc.)
These hours must have been completed within five years prior to application submission.

Supervised Practical Training
200 hours specific to the domains.
150 hours with an associate's degree or a non-reciprocal AODA counselor credential.
100 hours with a bachelor's degree or an IC&RC reciprocal AODA counselor credential.
80 hours with a master's degree or an IC&RC reciprocal CCS credential; no hours are required with a master's degree or above or an IC&RC advanced AODA counselor credential or other advanced credential (NBCC, CRCC, NASW, MAC, etc.) A minimum of ten hours in each domain is required.

Examination
Applicants must pass the IC&RC International Written Criminal Justice Addictions Professional Examination.

Code of Ethics
Applicants must sign a criminal justice specific code of ethics statement & statement of understanding.

Recertification
40 hours of continuing education earned every two years, 6 hours must be in Professional Ethics and Responsibility.
